The Oak Knoll property, initially approved for development nearly a decade ago, still lacks built homes despite extensive planning and management changes. Freehold Communities has taken over the project with hopes of resuming progress by 2026. The development will include 290 homes in its first phase, part of a larger plan for 918 homes and space for shops and parks. Various market forces, including high interest rates and local barriers, have impeded construction in Oakland, posing challenges for developers moving forward.
"We hope to get the project back on track so we see notable progress here as 2025 turns into 2026," said Brad Shuckhart, Freehold's regional president overseeing the project.
The full project has 918 homes - townhouses, single-family homes, and similar - as well as 86,000 square feet of space for shops, trails, and parks.
