Lopez: If caregivers for our elders get deported, who takes their place?
Briefly

As California's population ages, the demand for caregivers rises significantly, with projections indicating that 22% of residents will be 65 or older by 2040. Despite this escalating need, federal policies aimed at deporting undocumented workers could exacerbate the existing shortage of caregivers. Many positions in long-term care are challenging to fill due to low pay and difficult conditions. Without sufficient homegrown replacements or attractive job incentives, the care sector faces a crisis in providing for an aging populace, especially as immigration enforcement intensifies.
Deporting care providers might make sense if there were a plan to make the jobs more attractive to homegrown replacements, but none of us would bet a day-old doughnut on that happening.
The world is getting grayer each day thanks to an epic demographic wave, with 22% of California's residents projected to be 65 and older by 2040.
