NYC MARATHON | Running the distance: Queens runner gears up for 25th TCS New York City Marathon with NYRR's Team Inspire - QNS
"Who says women can't run the world?"
"But to me, running is a sport that takes all the labels off. All the things that say, 'I can't because,'"
"Everybody's doing the best they can at whatever distance they're running, and they're doing it because they want to be there."
Karen Bdera, 64, is an East Elmhurst-based runner preparing for her 25th TCS New York City Marathon with NYRR's Team Inspire after running over 700 New York Road Runners races. She began running after seeing a bus advertisement for the L'Eggs Mini-Marathon and described her first race as empowering, enjoying its positive, non-competitive atmosphere. She says running strips away limiting labels and counters the idea of 'I can't because,' noting that people run because they want to be there. Family, friends and fellow runners motivate her, and she aims to inspire the next generation of runners while honoring teammates with life-changing medical stories.
