"Per Sia takes over as the city's second Drag Laureate, following LGBTQ+ nightclub owner and performer D'Arcy Drollinger. The role was created in 2023 by the office of former Mayor London Breed in conjunction with the city's Human Rights Commission and the San Francisco Public Library, which also oversees the city's poet laureate position. According to the Chronicle, the San Francisco Drag Laureate's term was originally intended to last 18 months and came with a $55,000 stipend, funded by the library."
"The role will now last three years and comes with a $35,000 stipend. As drag laureate, Per Sia's duties will include participating in San Francisco's Pride celebrations, acting as a spokesperson for the city's LGBTQ+ community, and promoting the art of drag in the city. "As San Francisco's Drag Laureate, Per Sia will lead the way for new representation that uplifts and highlights the storied drag history of our city and the significant contributions of the trans and entire LGBTQ+ community to San Francisco," current mayor Daniel Lurie said, according to the Chronicle."
Per Sia was named San Francisco's Drag Laureate and is the first transgender woman to hold the position. Per Sia is a performer and educator who formerly read at Drag Queen Story Hour and identifies as visibly trans, brown, Mexican, and a product of immigrant parents. Per Sia said that everything about her is on the line in the current political climate. The role now spans three years with a $35,000 stipend and includes duties such as participating in Pride, serving as an LGBTQ+ spokesperson, and promoting the art of drag. The role was created in 2023 and followed predecessor D'Arcy Drollinger.
