The BBC's new series, 'What It Feels Like for a Girl,' dives into a poignant journey of self-discovery and identity through the life of Byron, portrayed by Ellis Howard. Set in noughties Nottingham and based on Paris Lees' memoir, the show showcases the struggles and triumphs faced by queer individuals. The cast, including Laquarn Lewis and Hannah Jones, share personal accounts of their queer awakenings, highlighting how pop culture icons like Nicki Minaj and significant events, like concerts, contributed to their understanding of identity. It's an intimate portrayal of finding one's place in the LGBTQ+ community.
"I just knew I was gay when I was introduced to Nicki Minaj," said Lewis before the cast dissolved into giggles quoting Nicki memes.
"Honestly, she's the only person who could make me straight. I'm obsessed," Lewis added.
Jones recalled, "The stage lit up in rainbows and he sang 'Heaven'. I was like, 'Oh, my God, my tribe is queer people.'
Howard shared that his awakening makes him "like music that really resonates with the queer experience, pushing boundaries and exploring identity."
