Somewhere to Oakland is a month-long series of free events taking place at Frank H. Ogawa/Oscar Grant Plaza from July 8-26, 2025. The project features BANDALOOP's vertical dance, live music, and community rituals involving over 50 local artists. It highlights themes of migration through shared storytelling, emphasizing both human and bird journeys. Key activities include writing workshops, samba events, and collaborative art making. The iconic Oakland landmarks will serve as the backdrop for these multi-dimensional performances and community engagements, encouraging participation and fostering connection among attendees.
Taking flight in Frank H. Ogawa/Oscar Grant Plaza, Somewhere to Oakland will transform the iconic Jack London Oak Tree, the Rotunda Building, and Oakland City Hall into a flyway for vertical dance, community singing, and social art practice.
This intergenerational project uplifts community voices through embodied storytelling that interweaves bird and human migration.
