""There are definitely a lot of us who do want more apartment buildings, who do want better public infrastructure and biking as well,""
""I do feel like there is a pervasive narrative where Chinese Americans on the Westside are generally anti-urbanist, generally don't want to see growth,""
""We want to make it easier to organize.""
""We got to talk about these urban issues. We've got to talk about housing, transportation, everything,""
Asian Urbanists held an inaugural meetup at Sunset Commons on Irving Street with roughly two dozen Asian San Franciscans. Many attendees were affiliated with YIMBY groups, familiar with Mayor Lurie’s upzoning plan and city zoning codes, and described themselves as environmentalists who arrived by public transit or bike. Leaders James Wen and Chang Sun emphasized support for more apartment buildings, better public infrastructure, biking, and making it easier to organize. Janelle Wong encouraged Asian involvement in housing debates and helped prompt the meetup amid the Joel Engardio recall campaign. The group aims to change prevailing perceptions about Westside attitudes toward growth.
