The National Association of Realtors (NAR) has amended its Realtor Code of Ethics, Standard of Practice 10-5, which previously prohibited hate speech and harassment based on various personal attributes. The new amendment suggests that Realtors should follow these ethical guidelines but does not mandate it. This change aims to align NAR's policies with those of other trade organizations and to clarify the definition of harassment. NAR President Kevin Sears emphasized the need for clear enforcement to maintain the integrity of the Code.
Under the amended policy, Realtors are encouraged but not required to follow the code in all of their activities.
NAR said this brings the policy's application in line with similar ethical requirements from other large national trade groups.
NAR President Kevin Sears stated that there has been uncertainty about the interpretation and implementation of these standards of practice.
These amendments provide clarity to our members, reduce risk for enforcement of the Code, and uphold principles of fair housing.
