49ers to leverage Robert Saleh and Gus Bradley's close relationship to revive defense
Briefly

Robert Saleh retained most of his coaching staff upon returning as the 49ers' defensive coordinator. He hired Gus Bradley, a former Jaguars head coach and mentor, as assistant head coach/defense. Saleh values their strong working relationship and complementary perspectives on defense. There has been a longstanding interest in Bradley from coach Kyle Shanahan, who originally considered him for the team's defensive coordinator position back in 2017 before Bradley chose to join the Los Angeles Chargers.
"I've been with Gus for a long time and just [have] so much respect for him. While our philosophies are the same, I should say we look at it differently, if that makes sense. And it's kind of a good yin and yang."
"Shanahan thought highly enough of Bradley that he was firmly in the mix to be Shanahan's first defensive coordinator in San Francisco, but Bradley opted to take on that role with the Los Angeles Chargers instead."
