HSH plans to implement longer shelter extensions, allowing providers to authorize a 90-day extension independently. Further extensions will be granted by HSH, aimed at preventing families from returning to unsheltered homelessness. The initiative responds to the limited availability of support services, including rapid re-housing. Mayor Daniel Lurie emphasized compassion and the need for flexible policies to assist families in accessing permanent housing. The updated policy is driven by feedback from service providers, families, and data analysis on shelter outcomes.
Christin Evans, the vice chair of San Francisco's Homelessness Oversight Commission, stated, "There are very long waitlists for people to get those resources. It's really concerning that they know that there's these limited resources and they're essentially giving people very limited time in the shelter and knowing that this will result in people re-entering homelessness, unsheltered homelessness."
HSH explained that the updated policy reflects conversations with service providers and families and an analysis of shelter outcome data, revealing that the gap threatened to let families in the supportive housing system backslide.
Mayor Daniel Lurie remarked, "This updated policy leads with compassion for those in shelter trying to provide for their families while helping them access permanent housing opportunities. And it will help encourage flow in our system, opening up much-needed space for families on the street right now."
Lurie emphasized, "When government isn't afraid to try things and listen to feedback, we can craft thoughtful, effective policies, and that's what we've done here."
