The Royals announced that right-hander Spencer Turnbull has been signed to a minor league contract.
Smith landed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain prior to Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving San Francisco without its best defensive first baseman for at least the next week-and-a-half. With 15 games remaining, Smith may not have enough time to rehab the injury and return for the end of the regular season. In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Jerar Encarnacion was reinstated from the 10-day injured list after he dealt with his own right hamstring strain.
Nearby kayakers and a boat emblazoned with the Ghostbusters logo came to the aid of three people whose kayaks overturned while they were watching the Giants-Dodgers game Saturday. The Giants lost the game, 13-7. As KRON4 reports, the kayakers fell overboard around 8:30 pm and were quickly rescued by nearby kayakers and a private boat prior to the San Francisco Fire Department's arrival on the scene.
The Atlanta Braves got off to a slow start in this weekend's series with the Houston Astros, beginning the set with an 11-3 loss. Hurston Waldrep got the ball and threw an unimpressive 4.2 innings, where he surrendered eight runs on eight hits. He recorded two walks and four strikeouts. Not only did Waldrep have a disappointing outing, but the Atlanta offense was also subpar. The Astros held the Braves scoreless until the sixth and by the time the night was done, the Atlanta lineup mustered just five hits.
In the recent years I've tried to become a 162-girl. If you don't know what I'm talking about, being a 162 person means that you care about every single baseball game that your team plays. Every game matters to you, from the inning-byinning minutiae to the broader divisional/post-season context. Some people can't be 162-ers, whether they don't have the time to be fully invested or don't have the drive. But the diehards who have the time and energy are my 162 people.
Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal was removed from tonight's contests in the fourth inning. He motioned to the dugout to call someone out to the mound. Manager A.J. Hinch and a member of the training staff visited him and the lefty was lifted. At this point, it can only be speculated what the issue is. The team hasn't yet made any announcements about what's going on.
Chapman had faced a suspension and an undisclosed fine after he made contact with Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland. Chapman, Freeland and Giants shortstop Willy Adames were ejected following the first-inning fracas during San Francisco's 7-4 win at Coors Field, then Chapman led the Giants past the Rockies 10-8 a night later - playing the game as the appeal was considered.
Not long ago, the Reds found themselves in possession of what looked to be a borderline surplus of infielders. Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Jonathan India, Noelvi Marte, Spencer Steer and Christian Encarnacion-Strand all had varying levels big league experience even before Cincinnati signed Jeimer Candelario to a three-year contract. A wide range of opinions on how to best divide the playing time persisted, but the Reds had the makings of a formidable collection of young bats.
The Twins announced that right-hander Justin Topa has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left oblique strain, retroactive to September 9th. Fellow righty Cody Laweryson has been selected to take Topa's place on the roster. The Twins had just 37 men on their 40-man, so no other corresponding move is required as this brings their count up to 38.
Let's get the obvious out of the way: "Toy Cannon" is the coolest nickname in Miami Marlins history. Coolest, and the most apt. For Cody Ross was exactly that, an explosive, seemingly secret weapon for the Marlins. Long before cousin Trevor Rogers toed the rubber for the Miami, the team's original Pride of Carlsbad patrolled the outfield from 2006 to 2010- sometimes as a fourth outfielder type, sometimes as locked in starter.
By losing their fourth consecutive game on Tuesday night, 9-3, at Citizens Bank Park, the Mets fell to within two games of the nearest Wild Card aspirant, the surging San Francisco Giants. The stubbornly viable Cincinnati Reds also won on Tuesday, moving them within three of the Mets. New York, once seen as a sure entrant into the National League playoffs, appears to be standing on ever shakier ground.
Prior to the 2025 MLB season, the Toronto Blue Jays signed three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer to a one-year contract. With his experience, it seemed like a quality signing for the Blue Jays to add to the rotation. Scherzer's 2025 season has had some struggles, dealing with injuries and rough starts. However, a steady July and August helped the Blue Jays to keep their AL East Division lead. At 41 years old, Scherzer turned into a quality starter on the Blue Jays roster.
On Tuesday the Rockies dropped a home game to the Giants, giving them their 100th loss of the season. Though the Rockies have never won a division title in their 33 seasons as a franchise - their postseason appearances in 1995, 2007, 2017, and 2018 came as a wild card team - one point of pride used to be that they had never lost 100 games in a season.
ST. LOUIS The Giants lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 on Saturday night at Busch Stadium as closer Ryan Walker allowed three runs in the bottom of the ninth without recording a single out, ending San Francisco's winning streak at five games. Nolan Gorman and Mason Wynn led off the bottom of the ninth with back-to-back singles, then Walker loaded the bases by plunking Jimmy Crooks.
Miller went to the Charm City to be a part of the 30th anniversary celebration of Cal Ripken Jr.'s record-breaking "Iron Man" streak, as Ripken passed Lou Gehrig with his 2,131st consecutive game on Sept. 6, 1995. Miller was the Orioles' primary radio broadcaster from 1983 to 1996, which covered the vast majority of Ripken's streak, and was on the radio call for the record-breaking night.
's 2025 season will end without any big league action, as Rangers manager Bruce Bochy told MLB.com's Kennedi Landry and other reporters that Sborz has been shut down from throwing. Sborz underwent right shoulder debridement surgery last November and didn't return to game action until he tossed two-thirds of an inning with Triple-A Round Rock on July 12. The right-hander's rehab assignment had multiple stops and starts, and Sborz finished with a 5.25 ERA over 12 combined innings at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.
1905 - Frank Smith of the Chicago White Sox pitched a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers in a 15-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. The score is the most lopsided margin of victory for a no-hitter in AL history. 1912 - Smokey Joe Wood of the Red Sox, on his way to a 34-win season, beat Washington's Walter Johnson 1-0 at Boston. The victory was Wood's 14th consecutive, two shy of Johnson's AL record of 16 straight.
ST. LOUIS - The Giants have transformed into an offensive juggernaut over the last two weeks, and Luis Matos has had no small role in that success. Since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Aug. 21, Matos is hitting .400/.429/.711 with three home runs, eight RBIs and 11 runs scored over 12 games. In his fourth game back, Matos led the Giants to a win over the Milwaukee Brewers by hitting a two-run homer in the second, then scoring the go-ahead run on a single by Heliot Ramos in the ninth.
One of those minor league teams is the Las Vegas Aviators, the AAA (the highest level of minor league baseball and basically their "AHL") affiliate of the Oakland A's. The Aviators are paying tribute to the city's NHL team, the Golden Knights, with a giveaway on their September 18th game. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a Golden Knights and Aviators crossover baseball jersey.
VIENNA, Virginia Vienna is a town of about 17,000 people in high-density Fairfax County, which has a population of just more than 1 million and is just west of the nation's capital. It is about 10 miles from the baseball field at James Madison High in Vienna to the White House in Washington, a city that was without a Major League Baseball team from 1972 until the Nationals came to town in 2005.
