A US judge has mandated that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) restore funding for hundreds of research projects on diversity, equity, inclusion, and COVID-19 that were previously cancelled. This ruling specifically impacts scientists involved in lawsuits from 16 states, accounting for roughly one-third of the 2,400 NIH projects cut. Judge William Young emphasized that these funding cuts amount to discrimination against racial and LGBTQ communities, highlighting the ongoing conflict between science and policy in governmental funding decisions.
"This represents racial discrimination and discrimination against America's LGBTQ community," said Judge William Young, who was appointed by former Republican president Ronald Reagan. "I would be blind not to call it out."
The judge's ruling means that hundreds of canceled NIH research projects on diversity, equity and inclusion, and COVID-19 must be restored as part of a lawsuit involving 16 states.
