Kostensuchas atrox lived about 70 million years ago in the floodplains of present-day Patagonia. The species functioned as a giant crocodile-like apex predator that hunted large prey, probably including medium-sized dinosaurs. Fossil evidence and 3D reconstructions indicate adaptations for powerful ambush predation in aquatic and marginal environments. Morphological features suggest a strong bite force and a semi-aquatic hunting lifestyle similar to modern crocodilians. The species occupied a top predator role within Late Cretaceous Patagonian ecosystems and shaped predator-prey dynamics across floodplain habitats.
