Nozomi Ando named to Schmidt Polymaths cohort | Cornell Chronicle
"remarkable track records, promising futures and a desire to expand their research portfolios by exploring a substantive disciplinary or methodological shift soon after achieving tenure,"
"Nozomi has built an internationally recognized career by crossing disciplinary boundaries - from physics and chemistry to biology - to pioneer new structural biology methods for probing the motions that proteins undergo during catalysis and regulation,"
"With the Polymath Award, she will take a bold new step into uncharted territory, integrating biochemistry, geochemistry and evolutionary biology to explore the co-evolution of life and the planet."
"To be recognized by the Schmidt Science Polymaths Program means a great deal to me. The freedom this award provides allows me to step outside the usual boundaries and expectations, and that is truly amazing."
Nozomi Ando was named a Schmidt Polymath and will join a global cohort of eight scientists and engineers receiving up to $2.5 million over five years. The award supports researchers with strong records and the intent to pursue substantive disciplinary or methodological shifts soon after tenure. Ando has crossed physics, chemistry, and biology to develop structural biology methods that probe protein motions, including establishing diffuse X-ray scattering as a window into protein dynamics and studying enzyme adaptation to Earth’s changing atmosphere. The selection draws candidates worldwide and prioritizes early-stage, novel research that is otherwise difficult to fund.
