Tahoe's clarity is not improving. Scientists are racing for answers.
Briefly

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center's recent report reveals that Lake Tahoe's water clarity has stabilized at 62.3 feet, almost 6 feet less than 2023. While clarity isn't worsening, it’s not improving either, raising concerns among scientists. The Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program, a $3.1 billion initiative involving 80 organizations, has drastically reduced sediment pollution, but challenges like climate change and algae presence threaten future clarity. Stephanie Hampton, director at the research center, highlights the success in halting clarity decline, while questioning ongoing stagnation in improvements.
"We should really celebrate the success that seems evident in the data, in the sense that management and restoration seem to have been successful in at least slowing or possibly halting that trend in the water clarity degrading," said Stephanie Hampton.
"But why isn't it getting any better?" Hampton added.
