Supermicro's co-founder was just accused of smuggling $2.5 billion in GPUs to China | Fortune
"The Department of Justice unsealed an indictment charging Yih-Shyan Liaw and two others with allegedly working in secret to divert billions in Supermicro AI servers to China in violation of U.S. export control laws."
"Liaw and Chang allegedly directed executives at an unnamed Southeast Asian company to place purchase orders with Supermicro, disguising the true destination of the servers."
"To keep the clandestine scheme from raising red flags, the defendants and Southeast Asian company executives would fake documents and send false communications to show that the Southeast Asian company was the legitimate end buyer."
Yih-Shyan Liaw, a Silicon Valley executive, was arrested for allegedly conspiring to divert Supermicro AI servers to China. The indictment charges Liaw, along with Ruei-Tsang Chang and Ting-Wei Sun, with violating U.S. export control laws. The scheme involved directing a Southeast Asian company to place orders for servers, which were then shipped to Taiwan and ultimately sent to China. To avoid detection, the defendants allegedly faked documents and communications to mislead Supermicro's compliance team about the true end buyers of the servers.
