Joining Spurs a bad decision by Wilson - McInnes
""James wanted to go, so you don't want to keep a player who then becomes unhappy,""
""I couldn't guarantee him minutes, such is the way it's been. I told him and his agent that our preference was to stay, fight for your place, be part of something.""
""But his head was turned with the Tottenham thing. First it was Arsenal, then Arsenal went quiet, and then all of a sudden Tottenham came to the table.""
""I don't think it's the right move for him. Ultimately, it's academy football and I think he's better than that. But it was something James wanted to do."}],"
James Wilson, 18, joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan with a potential permanent option and will play for Spurs' Under-21s. Arsenal had been in talks but went quiet before Tottenham completed the deal. Wilson became the youngest man to represent Scotland after appearing in the Nations League play-off against Greece. He has eight goals in 45 senior appearances since his breakthrough but has struggled for game time this season. Derek McInnes preferred Wilson to remain at Hearts or go on a Scottish loan to preserve minutes and expressed doubts that academy football matches Wilson's current level. Hearts remain top but face striker shortages following Wilson's exit and Lawrence Shankland's injury.
