Arlene Geiger, a longtime resident of the Upper West Side, has dedicated her life to activism, participating in thousands of marches, rallies, and protests since the 1970s. Her activism began during the Vietnam War and intensified after Donald Trump’s election in 2016. Geiger founded the Upper West Side Action Group, aligning with national organizations like Indivisible and Swing Left. Her efforts attracted many new supporters following Trump's victory, reflecting a widespread concern among the community. Geiger identifies more with political engagement than the counterculture ethos of the 1970s hippies.
Geiger, who has lived on the Upper West Side for 55 years, has literally gone to thousands of marches, rallies, sit-ins, and protests across the country for progressive causes.
Her political activism, which began in the early 1970s against the Vietnam War, has greatly accelerated since the election of President Donald Trump in 2016.
Geiger's life has been one of full-steam-ahead involvement. She is the founder and leader of the Upper West Side Action Group, which is also a chapter of two large national activist organizations, Indivisible and Swing Left.
"It was overwhelming, the number of people who signed up then," she recalled. "I was oversubscribed. People were scared."
