The remains of Bishop Eamonn Casey have been removed from Galway Cathedral crypt after nearly a year of deliberation by his family and church officials. This action follows multiple allegations of child sexual abuse and the revelation of his prior removal from ministry by the Vatican. This marks the first instance of an Irish bishop being disinterred in light of allegations of abuse. Survivors' advocates emphasize the importance of the decision, aiming for closure for Casey's victims who found his burial offensive and hurtful.
Colm O'Gorman, a campaigner for survivors of clerical sexual abuse, stated that disinterment was 'obviously the right decision'. He emphasized that burial in a 'cathedral crypt makes a statement about that person's standing and reputation'. This burial was a source of great offense and hurt to Bishop Casey's victims.
The founder of One in Four expressed hope that the decision allowing Casey's family to re-inter his body elsewhere would bring closure to his victims, as his interment in Galway Cathedral caused very great hurt.
