Amazon details Bay Area cutbacks that will erase hundreds of jobs
"We're investing in our biggest bets and what matters most to our customers' current and future needs, Galetti stated. While this will include reducing in some areas and hiring in others, it will mean an overall reduction in our corporate workforce of approximately 14,000 roles. More job cuts could loom at Amazon in 2026, company executives warned its rank and file. The world is changing quickly, Galetti stated. This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we've seen since the Internet."
"We're seeing that tech companies want to be smaller, and they feel they need fewer layers of decision makers, said Russell Hancock, president of Joint Venture Silicon Valley, a San Jose-based think tank. They need less bureaucracy. The tech company's Bay Area job cuts are part of Amazon's worldwide elimination of several thousand jobs. In an Oct. 28 open letter to employees, Beth Galetti, an Amazon senior vice president of people experience and technology, sought to sketch out the rationale behind the reductions."
Amazon plans to eliminate 643 Bay Area jobs—391 in Sunnyvale, 176 in Palo Alto, and 76 in Santa Clara—with the layoffs described as permanent and slated for Jan. 26, 2026. The WARN notice said additional reductions tied to the Bay Area cuts could occur Feb. 27 and March 27, 2026. Southern California reductions total 760 jobs across Irvine, Culver City, Santa Monica, and San Diego. The Bay Area cuts are part of a worldwide corporate workforce reduction of approximately 14,000 roles as the company refocuses on strategic bets and adapts to rapid AI-driven change.
