Are Fiber and Fixed Wireless the New PB&J?
Briefly

At the Fiber Connect 2025 conference, Zyxel Communications President Karsten Gewecke discussed the potential for fiber and fixed wireless access (FWA) to coexist rather than compete in broadband delivery. He referenced European markets, particularly Norway’s rapid adoption of 5G FWA, noting it as an interim but evolving solution. While acknowledging the differing strengths of both technologies, Gewecke views broadband as a commodity and proposes a convergence strategy. However, he expressed skepticism about satellite broadband, stating it serves limited applications and isn't a viable large-scale solution.
In the beginning, 5G was seen as kind of an interim solution, but around three years ago, mobile carriers entered the market offering fixed wireless through their existing networks.
For [Zyxel], it's really just another access technology. Why have two different business units? It's a convergence between fixed wireless access and fiber access.
5G is evolving extremely fast. We are already into the sixth to seventh generation of 5G devices in just three or four years.
I cannot serve wide-scale deployment. It could be a niche application somewhere where there isn't coverage, and the sky's always there.
