Former OpenAI engineer says he received about 10 emails during his year there
Briefly

Calvin French-Owen worked at OpenAI, where he noted the company predominantly uses Slack for internal communication instead of email, receiving around just ten emails during his tenure. He shared his experiences in a blog post to provide a firsthand perspective on OpenAI's culture amidst prevalent speculation. French-Owen pointed out that while Slack can be distracting, it is manageable with careful curation. He also observed a notable migration of engineering staff from Meta to OpenAI, likening the two companies' characteristics and urgency in developing consumer applications.
"There is no email. I maybe received ~10 emails in my entire time there," he wrote in a blog post.
"An unusual part of OpenAI is that everything, and I mean everything, runs on Slack," French-Owen wrote, referencing the workplace messaging program owned by Salesforce.
"Using Slack over email can be incredibly distracting, but OpenAI's practice is pretty workable if people curate their channels and notifications," he added.
"In many ways, OpenAI resembles early Meta: a blockbuster consumer app, nascent infra, and a desire to move really quickly," he wrote.
