Reflections on OpenAI
Briefly

OpenAI experienced rapid growth, expanding from about 1,000 to over 3,000 employees in a year. The scaling presented challenges in communication, product delivery, and management. The culture within teams varies significantly, with some teams operating at full speed while others maintain a more steady pace. The departure decision stemmed from a personal desire for a fresh start rather than negative experiences at the company. Reflections from time at OpenAI acknowledge the unique opportunity to contribute to significant technological advancements, including AGI and LLMs.
The company was a little over 1,000 people. One year later, it is over 3,000 and I was in the top 30% by tenure.
OpenAI is a big place, and this is my little window into it. Everything breaks when you scale that quickly.
