Doctor Who's future confirmed by BBC as Disney ends partnership
"The BBC has finally confirmed the future of Doctor Who, much to the relief of fans. Following the end of the latest season, there were questions about whether we'd be getting anymore and, if so, when. Those questions were answered when the BBC announced on Tuesday (28 October) that the long-running sci-fi series would be returning next year with a Christmas special, written by Russell T Davies."
"The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most-loved dramas and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans [that] the Doctor is not going anywhere and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC."
BBC has confirmed Doctor Who will return next year with a Christmas special written by Russell T Davies, and plans for a new season will be announced in due course. The partnership with Disney+ has ended. BBC drama director Lindsay Salt thanked Disney+ and affirmed BBC's commitment, promising the TARDIS remains central and that Davies will write a 2026 Christmas special. Fans will see a five-part spin-off starring Russell Tovey before year-end and a new CBeebies animated series is in development. Earlier uncertainty and rumours about axing due to ratings and 'woke' plots were publicly rejected.
