Keegan Matheson, a Blue Jays beat writer, discussed his journey from a fan in Halifax to a professional journalist after attending journalism school in 2016. He admitted to experiencing burnout due to an overwhelming focus on baseball, which consumed his identity. Matheson realized he needed to step back and reconnect with his passion for the game, a process that was revitalized through writing his book. The conversations and stories he encountered reignited his love for baseball and brought joy back into his work.
I made the mistake of letting baseball become my entire identity. And when that happens, there's not much else. And that really led me to burnout.
Writing those stories kinda energized me again and woke me up again. Talking to players about the best days of their lives and meaningful emotional things kind of perked me up again.
