Toronto is set to introduce a third electricity transmission line to enhance power supply to the downtown area and replace aging infrastructure. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce emphasized the need for proactive planning, highlighting the expected doubling of electricity demand by 2050, especially from the downtown core. The new line would support significant growth and transit projects, including the Ontario Line. With current supply routes nearing capacity, Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator will recommend a site for the line by August, with construction potentially taking 7-10 years.
"Today is about planning ahead, about doing the hard work to make sure Toronto has the energy infrastructure needs, not just for today, but for decades to come."
"That's not just because we're building new homes or the Ontario Line. It's because of the electrification of vehicles, of heating and industry."
