Shane Baz struggled in his start against the Chicago White Sox, allowing a career-high eight runs over four-plus innings. The Rays lost 8-3 in a crucial game as they fight for a playoff spot. Baz expressed his frustration over his performance, citing a lack of sharpness and command. Notably, he surrendered a three-run homer to Brooks Baldwin following two outs and lost command in the third inning, leading to further runs. The Rays' two runs in the fourth were ultimately overshadowed by Baz's fifth-inning struggles, where he allowed more runs.
"I just didn't feel sharp, just not good enough in any aspect of executing pitches, having command or sequencing, or any of it," said Baz.
"It was just subpar really from top to bottom. They did a good job. It happens...especially when you're fighting for a playoff spot and you have that type of performance in the first game of the series."
Baz gave up three runs in the second inning... when No. 9 hitter Brooks Baldwin turned a first-pitch fastball over the middle of the plate into a three-run homer.
He gave up three more runs in the third when he lost his command. Rookie shortstop Chase Meidroth, who had a career-high four hits, led off the inning with a single and then Baz walked two batters.
