The Ontario government has granted Toronto $67.2 million after the city met 88% of its housing starts target last year. Premier Doug Ford criticized other municipalities for not building enough, while recognizing Mayor Olivia Chow's efforts. However, the province anticipates a decline in housing begins in 2025, projecting around 2,800 fewer units compared to 2024. With only 260,000 housing starts since 2020, the goal of 1.5 million new homes by 2031 may be at risk given projected downward trends in future years.
"You have certain mayors in certain towns and cities that absolutely refuse to build. They aren't building a doghouse," Premier Doug Ford said.
This is the second round of funding from the province's Building Faster Fund, which provides funding to municipalities that hit at least 80 percent of their housing targets.
