"I decided to embrace this adventure when I learned I would have a conference to attend in the southern Swedish city of Kalmar. The reasons? Well, I've got to say a pretty important one: the institution where I work, the University of Vienna, encourages academic staff to use trains instead of flights for conferences and meetings, when possible, for environmental reasons."
"The first tip for multiple train journeys: get an Interrail ticket I already had some experience travelling by train in Europe, so I knew the best way to book the trip. You can buy tickets for each leg separately from each train company you are taking, but you always risk encountering problems if one of the trains is late and you miss the next one, as buying a single ticket covering such a long trip is impossible."
"After all, I had done a similar trip to southern France before for the same reason, and Kalmar would be just a few more hours away. Plus, I was excited about crossing four countries on my way and catching a glimpse of each from the window of the train. With the long journey ahead - and good internet connection, I took the opportunity to get a head start on some work."
The University of Vienna encourages staff to use trains instead of flights for conferences and meetings when possible, with an exception for cities more than six hours away by train. The traveler opted for a train journey from Austria to Kalmar, Sweden, crossing four countries and using onboard internet to work during the long trip. An Interrail pass was chosen to avoid the risks of separate tickets and missed connections, allowing selection of legs and only booking seat reservations when required. The round-trip train cost was about €300 without seat reservations, and flying then taking a train was not much cheaper unless booked well in advance.
