British hikers Aziz Ziriat and Sam Harris were reported missing in the Dolomites on New Year's Day. After an extensive search, rescuers found Ziriat's body buried in snow about 1 km from where Harris was found. Both hikers were last seen at a mountain hut, with the alarm raised after they missed their return flight. The search involved multiple rescue teams, including canine units, and ended with the confirmation of their deaths. The Foreign Office is supporting the families affected by this tragedy.
A rescue dog detected his body in a rocky crevice, hidden beneath layers of snow. Ziriat's remains were found at the base of the cliffs, almost 1,000 metres away from Harris's initial location.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated: 'We are supporting the family of a British national who died in northern Italy and are in contact with the local authorities.'
