Over the past five years, Northern Ireland drivers have claimed more than £20.6m in compensation related to road defects and potholes. Almost 20,000 public liability claims were filed between April 2020 and March 2025. In 2024/25, the Department for Infrastructure settled £5.1m in claims, which is significantly higher than the £2m settled five years earlier. Personal injury claims made up 14% of last year's claims but represented 76% of awarded compensation. Potholes were responsible for 80% of claims filed last year, indicating a persistent issue for motorists.
In 2024/25, the value of claims settled by the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) amounted to £5.1m - more than double the amount paid out five years ago (£2m).
A recent survey by car insurance experts at CompareNI.com found that 91% of drivers in Northern Ireland have issues with potholes in their area, with 96% of respondents saying they weren't being fixed quickly enough.
