Seven days of industrial action will begin on 5 September by London Underground staff, with Docklands Light Railway workers striking the week starting 7 September, over pay, workload and conditions. The RMT cites concerns about pay, fatigue management, extreme shift rotations, shift patterns, a reduced working week and unresolved staff travel arrangements, saying these issues have harmed members' health and created distrust with management. RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey highlighted strenuous shift patterns and called for a negotiated settlement. Transport for London said it meets unions regularly, offered a 3.4% pay increase and welcomed further engagement on fatigue and rostering.
They are not after a king's ransom, but fatigue and extreme shift rotations are serious issues impacting on our members' health and wellbeing all of which have not been adequately addressed for years by LU management. Coupled with the fact there are outstanding issues around staff travel arrangements, an atmosphere of distrust has been created, where our members feel like no one is listening to them.
Tube workers are to stage a series of strikes next month in a dispute over pay and conditions amid an intensifying dispute with managers. The Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) said its members would take industrial action for seven days from 5 September amid a dispute over pay and workload, among other things. And, in a separate dispute, RMT members on London's Docklands Light Railway will also be striking in the week beginning 7 September.
