Mr Monopoly is surrounded with familiar symbols from the game."
"It is being released to celebrate nearly a century of mischief and mayhem of the property trading game, which has been sold more than 275m times globally and translated into 47 languages. Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, said: For nearly 90 years, families have been trading millions in Monopoly currency around kitchen tables, and now we're celebrating that beloved tradition with this collectible coin. We anticipate collectors, whether passionate about Monopoly or coins, will treasure this as a unique addition to their collections."
The Royal Mint is launching a colourful commemorative 50p coin to mark 90 years of Monopoly. The design features game tokens, property cards, and Mr Monopoly holding bags of cash. The GO sign on the coin reveals the £ symbol when tilted, and the Mint describes it as the first board game honoured on UK currency. The release celebrates a game sold over 275 million times and translated into 47 languages. A gold version will cost £1,730 and goes on sale from 9am Monday on the Royal Mint website; other versions range from £15–£25. The coin was previewed and praised by a leading collector. Monopoly evolved from Lizzie Magie's The Landlord's Game and was introduced to the UK by Waddingtons, with UK editions traditionally featuring London locations.
