Ricky Hatton began his professional career in 1997 and recorded his first TKO in January 1998 against David Thompson in Bristol. He retained the WBO intercontinental light-welterweight title by defeating Ambioris Figuero in May 2000 and won the vacant British light-welterweight championship in October 2000 despite a cut on his brow. He earned the nickname 'the Hitman' from his first coach. Hatton trained with his son Campbell ahead of a 2001 WBU title fight; Campbell later compiled a 14-2 record before retiring in July 2025. Hatton defeated Kostya Tszyu by TKO in June 2005 and was known for heavy eating between fights, extreme weight cuts before bouts, and a self-deprecating sense of humor.
