They have been detained for over five months without any formal charges. Initially held in a maximum-security prison, the couple was separated and faced difficult conditions. Barbie was imprisoned in a women's facility, while Peter was in a men’s prison, surrounded by dangerous criminals. Their son, Jonathan, noted the initial promise from the Taliban of a quick release that did not materialize, leading to an extensive detention period.
Barbie Reynolds, 76, and her husband Peter, 80, were arrested by the Taliban on 1 February when they were returning to their home in Bamyan province in central Afghanistan. They have spent five and a half months in detention without being charged and were held separately in a maximum-security prison until eight weeks ago.

Originally they were taken into local stations and transferred to Kabul put in a maximum security prison where they were separate, their son, Jonathan Reynolds said.
They were then transferred to the General Directorate of Intelligence (GDI), with the promise of release within two to three days, but this has turned into an extended detention.
