A recent study from the University of Queensland highlights the extensive use of vulgarities across 20 English-speaking nations. Analyzing over 1.7 billion words, the researchers found Americans lead in swearing, with 0.036% of their written content being vulgar. Britain follows with 0.025%, featuring 'c***' as the most common slur. Surprisingly, cultural differences impact these preferences significantly, with different countries favoring specific vulgar terms. The study emphasizes the contrast in swearing proclivity between various English-speaking regions, illustrating how language reflects cultural identities.
According to the results, 'c***' is the slur of choice in Britain, while 'a*****e' is particularly big in America and 'feck' is indeed beloved in Ireland.
Cultural differences are reflected in region-specific preferences for vulgarity,' say the authors, from the University of Queensland.
The researchers wanted to look at the cultural differences in the use of vulgar language - including swear words, slurs and their multiple variants and misspellings.
Overall, they found 0.036 percent of the United States written output was made up of vulgar elements - more than any other nation.
