"The Assembly further calls on the mayor to ensure that clear guidance is put in place so that transport workers who act in good faith to protect passengers are treated fairly and supported, not punished."
"since there is no Mark on the buses, I don't feel that safe any more because I know the next driver isn't going to step off the bus to protect me because he's going to lose his job."
"recognises the overwhelming public concern surrounding this case"
A 62-year-old bus driver, Mark Hehir, retrieved a stolen necklace from a passenger's thief and punched the man when he returned to the bus in June 2024. CCTV showed the thief throwing a punch at Hehir; Metroline said the man returned intending to apologise and shake hands. Both men were arrested, but Hehir was released and not charged. The Met Police described Hehir's response as proportionate and necessary. Hehir was suspended the next day and later dismissed. The London Assembly passed a unanimous motion calling for investigation, fair treatment of protective transport workers, reinstatement or compensation, and clearer guidance.
