Lewis Adams CPS, a 65-year-old man from Harlow, Essex, was found guilty of attempting to spy for individuals he thought were Russian agents. He aimed to provide personal information about former defence secretary Sir Grant Shapps, believing he could be invaluable to a foreign power. Although he referred to agents Sasha and Dima as real operatives, they were undercover British intelligence officers. His activities included applying for a job with UK Border Force and communicating via WhatsApp about his loyalty and connections, which led to his arrest after an arranged meeting.
"Phillips told the agents on WhatsApp he was 'semi-retired but with connections in high places', before meeting them in both London and at Lakeside Shopping Centre in West Thurrock, Essex, on 9 May 2024."
"During one meeting, he asked them to use the word 'mother' instead of 'Moscow', adding he hoped mother would show her 'full appreciation' for his work."
