The left-wing independent candidate from Galway West felt surprised by the widespread support she received, which played a pivotal role in her decision to run for president. Having worked as a clinical psychologist and barrister, she emphasized her approachability and willingness to listen to all opinions. Mairead McGuinness has been officially nominated in the presidential race, while other parties have yet to clarify their candidates. The independent candidate has received endorsements from Social Democrats and People Before Profit, with Labour considering support as well.
"I was taken aback by the support I received, I wasn't expecting that level of support from people across the country, in English and Irish," she said speaking in Irish.
"I will give an ear to everyone, I worked as a clinical psychologist for seven years, and then I worked as a barrister. From that experience I can hear everyone's opinion."
