A far-right activist, Tommy Robinson (Stephen Yaxley-Lennon), was released from HMP Woodhill after seven months for contempt of court. Robinson announced plans for a free speech festival and the Unite the Kingdom rally on 13 September, promising international speakers and urging supporters to book travel and accommodation. Up to 150,000 people attended, creating what is thought to be the largest nationalist event in decades. The turnout surprised organisers and police, and marchers spilled out of Whitehall, where police failed to stop them encircling anti-racism counter-protesters.
