Following a protest outside a hotel housing asylum seekers, two individuals were arrested after violence erupted, with eight police officers assaulted. Riot police intervened as crowds, some masked, attacked counter-demonstrators and police with items like bottles and eggs. Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper condemned the actions as mindless thuggery and stated that the violence began after a peaceful protest. One man was arrested for affray, while another was taken into custody for failing to comply with police orders. Hooper warned against attending future protests at the location due to the potential for violence.
The assistant chief constable Stuart Hooper condemned the violence as mindless thuggery and said it was started by people who had come here intentionally to be involved in that kind of selfish vandalism and violence.
Eight of my officers...were assaulted last night and that is absolutely, totally unacceptable. They had injuries to their hands, and cuts and grazes as a result of the incidents last night.
Hooper urged people not to attend any future protests outside the hotel that have been discussed on social media.
If you are coming here with the intention of carrying out mindless thuggery, that is not acceptable and we will deal with that.
