A superinjunction was imposed to suppress a data breach that endangered 18,700 Afghans. This breach occurred when personal data was mistakenly revealed by a UK defence official in early 2022. The Afghanistan Response Route was hurriedly established in response to the leak. Grant Shapps defended the superinjunction, asserting it was necessary to protect individuals from potential harm, including British Special Forces and MI6 personnel. The superinjunction lapsed when the high court found the threat to Afghans was no longer significant.
My focus was on two things: one, sorting out the mess and saving lives, and two, making sure that systems were in place...that sensitive information could never be sent on.
Faced with the choice of whether that list would get out and people would be pursued, murdered and executed...I'd much rather be in this interview explaining why a superinjunction was required.
