The leaked dataset from the Ministry of Defence contains the names of nearly 19,000 Afghans who applied for the Afghan relocations and assistance policy. Defence Secretary John Healey clarified that most individuals on the list did not serve alongside British forces and therefore are not eligible for special resettlement schemes. The leak, first made public in August 2023, led to a court granting a superinjunction to protect information from Taliban access. Former Defence Secretary Ben Wallace denied claims the Conservative government sought a superinjunction, stating they requested a standard injunction instead.
John Healey stated, 'Most of those names on the list were people who didn't work alongside our forces, didn't serve with our forces, aren't eligible for the special scheme.'
Healey emphasized that being on the dataset does not provide a right to claim asylum, stating, 'It doesn't give them a right to claim access to Britain.'
Ben Wallace clarified that when ministers went to stop reporting of the leak, 'we applied for a four-month injunction, a normal injunction,' denying claims of seeking a superinjunction.
