"Our number one priority is growth, so I am taking Britain's offer of stability, regulatory agility and world-class expertise directly to one of the world's most important trade and investment hubs, making that case in our national interest."
"Our view on trade deals is consistent: the government should not agree deals with countries that abuse human rights and workers' rights, and violate international law."
Rachel Reeves will lead a delegation of senior business leaders to Saudi Arabia and meet senior Saudi royals, US administration representatives and global business figures. She is the first UK chancellor to visit the Gulf in six years. The trip aims to deepen UK ties with a state criticised for human rights abuses and to advance negotiations on a Gulf Cooperation Council trade agreement covering Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the UAE. The government projects a GCC deal could add £1.6bn to the UK economy annually and raise UK workers' wages by £600m long term. Campaigners and the Trades Union Congress urge legal commitments on human and workers' rights. Reeves is expected to finalise investments with Saudi partners as the government prepares a second budget amid pressure to announce further tax rises.
