Robert Jenrick's recent suggestion for armed prison guards has been met with significant skepticism from prison organizations, deeming it as 'headline-grabbing nonsense'. The Prison Governors' Association argues that, if armed intervention were necessary, the police should already be involved rather than creating a new force. Additionally, the Prison Officers' Association emphasized the need for non-lethal options like Tasers instead of firearms, highlighting existing agreements with local police for support. Recent incidents of violence in prisons emphasize the need for better investment in resources to combat crime rather than introducing guns.
The firearms/lethal force armouries suggestion is just headline-grabbing nonsense. If this was needed, why wouldn't armed police be deployed rather than creating another trained force in our service?
We are asking for Tasers and the use of non-lethal options. If we ever need firearm support we have an agreement with chief constables to provide mutual aid.
