Thanet district council aims to implement a public spaces protection order (PSPO) targeting swearing in designated areas. The PSPO will allow police to fine individuals £100 for using foul or abusive language that causes alarm or distress. This measure follows an increase in antisocial behavior at the seafront. Previous attempts to ban swearing were abandoned after legal threats. Research indicates swearing has potential mood and pain relief benefits, but the council specifies that the ban will focus on threatening language, not casual swearing.
According to Ch Insp Ian Swallow of the Kent police, this PSPO is specifically designed to target abusive language that is threatening and escalates trouble.
Thanet district council plans to use a public spaces protection order (PSPO) to issue fines for using foul or abusive language that can be heard by others.
