Erin Patterson, accused of murdering her estranged husband's relatives with death cap mushrooms in a home-cooked meal, is on trial in Victoria. Following a July 2023 lunch where her guests exhibited severe gastrointestinal symptoms, three died due to mushroom poisoning. Although Patterson denies the allegations, inconsistencies in her testimony emerged, including her failure to admit to mushroom foraging and the disposal of a food dehydrator. Prosecutors are painting a picture of deliberate deception as she pleads not guilty to multiple charges, facing life imprisonment if convicted.
Even after you were discharged from hospital you did not tell a single person that there may have been foraged mushroom used in the meal... Instead you got up, you drove your children to school ... and drove home. And then you got rid of the dehydrator. "Correct," Patterson replied.
Patterson, a mother of two, denies that the poisoning was deliberate and has pleaded not guilty to three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. She faces life imprisonment if convicted.
