Forest rangers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation were alerted at about 5pm on 29 August by a satellite text from a hiker reporting four lost hikers near Giant Ledge in the Slide Mountain Wilderness, a trail system with elevations from 1,100 to 2,600 ft and several sheer cliffs. The original caller acknowledged that the group had consumed psychedelic mushrooms and that one hiker was experiencing a debilitating high. Three rangers located the group around 6:45pm and escorted them to the trailhead for evaluation by a Shandaken ambulance crew. Rangers provided a courtesy ride to the hikers' rental lodging, and a ranger later recovered lost keys.
