Dan Stein, president of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), has played a pivotal role in shaping immigration policy in Washington D.C. His super-restrictive ideas, which have gained traction during Trump's presidency, are viewed as both prophetic by supporters and extremist by critics like the Southern Poverty Law Center. Stein's advocacy, rooted in claims about the negative impacts of illegal immigration on taxpayers and the environment, has moved previously fringe ideas into the public and political discourse, reshaping debates around immigration.
The reason why I believe FAIR has been so effective under my leadership is simply related to the fact we are able to spin out and this is one of the gifts I have the implications of what a policy will do over time based on past experience, how something will ramify.
There has been a rise in acceptance for ideas that were previously fringe, like mass deportations and eliminating birthright citizenship, which Stein has long promoted.
