Judge orders White House to allow AP access to news events
Briefly

A federal judge ruled that the Trump White House must allow Associated Press journalists back into the Oval Office after unlawfully blocking them over a naming dispute. The judge emphasized First Amendment rights, stating that the government can't restrict journalist access based on viewpoints. Despite the order, the White House appealed, continuing to limit AP access. This situation stems from a disagreement over the naming of the Gulf of Mexico, which the AP refers to traditionally rather than following President Trump’s preferred name 'Gulf of America.'
U.S. District Court Judge Trevor N. McFadden stated, "the Court simply holds that under the First Amendment, if the Government opens its doors to some journalists... it cannot then shut those doors to other journalists because of those viewpoints."
The judge ruled that the Trump administration’s rationale for blocking AP reporters was insufficient, emphasizing that the Constitution does not allow discrimination against journalists based on viewpoint.
